Our Co-Founder Nadia Shares Her Top Tips for Baby Nutrition
Our Co-Founder Nadia recently spoke with Little House Nurseries, sharing our top tips on baby nutrition health, weaning, and fussy eating.
For babies who are weaning, do you recommend purees or finger foods?
I’d advise a combination of both or whatever you feel most comfortable with as a parent because you know your baby better than anyone else and what they’re capable of managing in terms of texture.
There are benefits to doing both because weaning is all about adventure, exploring flavours and textures, so the more variety that you’re able to offer your baby – both in terms of ingredients and flavours but also texture – is really good for their development.
For babies, learning to pick up food and feed themselves is wonderful for their independence. Equally, purees are fantastic because you know that each spoonful is going to be packed full of different ingredients, and you can see a bit more clearly what they’re eating.
What vitamins are especially important for growing children?
One of the key nutrients that we really focus on is iron. Babies and young children can very commonly be iron deficient, and that’s really important from six months onwards, when babies are first being introduced to solids.
What foods are naturally rich in iron?
Foods that are a naturally great source of iron include good quality organic meats, and if you’re vegetarian, lentils, beans, and pulses are excellent alternatives.
What are your top tips for overcoming fussy eating?
The first thing I’d say is that fussy eating is so common, and often, it is just a phase, so don’t feel too disheartened if you’re experiencing it with your little one.
One of the top tips we have is to introduce new foods alongside familiar foods because when the plate is placed in front of them, it’s not too overwhelming.
Also, think about different textures. It’s quite common for little ones to be fussy about foods in sauces, for example. So perhaps introduce a curry with rice separately, along with some finger foods, so there’s a variety of textures and colours on the plate for them to explore.
